Prepare Your Home for the Las Vegas Summer Heat |
|
With an increase in temperatures comes an increased chance of fires in homes and businesses, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue. The organization has a list of past fires and ways to prevent them from happening. REFRIGERATIORS AND FREEZERS Many people have refrigerators and freezers in a garage or store room that does not have air conditioning. In order to keep the inside cold, the compressor must work extra hard to make up the heat difference. This leads the compressor to get extremely hot which can cause a fire on wood floors, carpet or near trash or other flammable items. Refrigerators and freezers inside the home don't have to work as hard to cool or freeze. EXTENSION CORDS Extension cords can cause fires if used with some appliances. The should not be used with Refrigerators, Freezers or Air Conditioner Units, as extension cords are not designed to carry the required electric load. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM Look for burn marks on the main electrical panel. Repair loosen connections or damaged insulation. Be sure to remove paper or combustible items that could be ignited if a spark occurred. CHEMICALS Any chemicals left in direct sunlight can cause a fire. Paints, fuels and others can explode in some cases. AIR CONDITIONERS AND FANS Check equipment for frayed wires and keep them clean. Fans can accumulate dust and dirt around the motor, which can cause a fire. Vacuum the fan to keep the motor clean. Air condition units should be maintained by a qualified technician. ITEMS IN VEHICLES Items in vehicles can explode or melt in some cases. Any type of aerosol can should not be left in vehicles especially in direct sunlight. Other items such as lighters, chemicals and items with flammable warnings. MULTI SERVICE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS and SMOKE ALARMS Be sure to keep fire extinguishers and smoke detectors throughout the home and garage. Routinely check to make sure they are working properly. |
